Ford just dropped a tasty video on the interwebs showing the car lapping one of our favorite tracks – Virginia International Speedway. <br style="line-height: 0.8em;" /><br style="line-height: 0.8em;" />Ford&#8217;s engineers had it in their minds that the new <a style="color: #006fb1; text-decoration: none; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial;" title="aluminum engine block" href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/10/2011-ford-shelby-gt500-chicago-debut/" target="_blank">aluminum block</a> with its 120-pound weight savings should help the car click off the 4.1-mile Grand West portion of the track about three seconds quicker than the outgoing car. Thing is, the 2011 GT500 managed to lap the track in 2:58.5 – a full nine seconds faster than last year&#8217;s version.</span></p>

<p>DETROIT, April 12, 2010 – <a title="Ford Motor Company" rel="homepage" href="http://www.ford.com" target="_blank">Ford Motor Company</a> announced today that three more engines with the company’s patented EcoBoost fuel-saving technology are scheduled to be launched by the end of the year. By 2013 Ford expects to be producing approximately 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally, about 200,000 more than originally expected.</p>
<p>Plans call for an EcoBoost engine to be available in 80 percent of the company’s global nameplates and 90 percent of North American nameplates. About half of the 1.5 million EcoBoost engines are expected to be sold in North America, while the rest are to be sold in <a title="Europe" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe" target="_blank">Europe</a>, South America and <a title="Asia-Pacific" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia-Pacific" target="_blank">Asia Pacific</a> regions.</p>
<p>“We are focused on sustainable technology solutions that can be used not for hundreds or thousands of <a title="Automobile" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile" target="_blank">cars</a>, but for millions of cars, because that’s how Ford will truly make a difference,” said Barb Samardzich, Ford’s vice president of powertrain <a title="Engineering" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineering" target="_blank">engineering</a>.</p>
<p>Samardzich is expected to detail EcoBoost production plans as well as the next three EcoBoost engines scheduled for launch by the end of the year during remarks Tuesday at the SAE World Congress.</p>
<p>The next three EcoBoost engines include:</p>
<ul>
<li>1.6-liter four-cylinder that will be offered in the European C-Max people mover. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost will deliver quick acceleration and class-leading fuel economy.</li>
<li>2.0-liter four-cylinder for the next-generation Ford <a title="Ford Explorer" rel="thecarconnection" href="http://www.thecarconnection.com/cars/ford_explorer" target="_blank">Explorer</a> <a title="Sport utility vehicle" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_utility_vehicle" target="_blank">SUV</a> and Edge CUV. This new engine will deliver best-in-class fuel economy and V-6 performance.</li>
<li>3.5-liter V-6 for the F-150. Ford engineers have upgraded the 3.5-liter V-6 for <a title="Automobile layout" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile_layout" target="_blank">rear-wheel-drive</a> applications. The EcoBoost F-150 is expected to deliver best-in-class fuel economy along with the power and towing capability of a V-8.</li>

<p>DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 25, 2010 – An all-new 6.2-liter V-8 gasoline engine, which has its roots in Ford Racing powerplants, joins the lineup for the 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty.</p>
<p>The new 6.2-liter V-8 gasoline engine delivers 405 ft.-lb. of torque (at 4,500 rpm) and 385 horsepower (at 5,500 rpm) on regular gasoline. These numbers represent an increase of 40 ft.-lb. of torque and 85 horsepower over the current 5.4-liter V-8.</p>
<p>“Our all-new 6.2-liter V-8 engine uses race-proven components and technology that have been optimized for the high performance and efficiency that our Super Duty customers demand,” said Mike Harrison, Ford V-8 engine programs manager. “It delivers not only significantly better torque and horsepower than current heavy-duty gas <a class="zem_slink" title="Internal combustion engine" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_combustion_engine">engines</a>, but also improved fuel economy.”</p>

<p>Like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/28/2011-ford-mustang-gt-offcially-rolls-with-a-5-0-v8/" target="_blank">2011 Mustang GT</a> at last month&#8217;s <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/" target="_blank">Detroit Auto Show</a>, the 2011 Shelby was unveiled here at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/chicago-auto-show/" target="_blank">Chicago Auto Show</a> with little fanfare. In fact, there wasn&#8217;t an unveiling at all, as the new Shelby was sitting uncovered on the show floor as soon as we arrived. The <a title="Automobile" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile" target="_blank">car</a> looks fantastic in person, especially with the optional Performance Package and its 19-inch forged <a title="Aluminium" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium" target="_blank">aluminum</a> wheels, and the thinner stripes look better than we expected.</p>
<p>The best part about the 2011 GT500, however, is underneath the hood. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/" target="_blank">Ford</a> has finally thrown out the heavy iron block in favor of an aluminum unit that contributed to a significant weight savings of 120 pounds. The GT500 still isn&#8217;t a lightweight at 3,820 pounds, but we fully expect the handling to be improved over the 2010 model with all that weight removed from the nose.</p>

<p>Ever since <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/" target="_blank">Ford</a> introduced the modern <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/shelby+gt500" target="_blank">Shelby GT500</a> four years ago, almost no one has complained about the prodigious power levels produced by its <a title="Supercharger" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercharger" target="_blank">supercharged</a> 5.4-liter <a title="V8 engine" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8_engine" target="_blank">V8</a>. With as much as 540 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque in the 2010 model, there was no shortage of grunt. No, the issue was an excess of mass.</p>
<p>Before the contemporary GT500 was born, Ford had a blown aluminum block 5.4-liter V8 in the short lived GT supercar. However, when the engineers at Ford&#8217;s <a title="Special Vehicle Team" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Vehicle_Team" target="_blank">Special Vehicle Team</a> developed the GT500, they opted to mount the GT&#8217;s <a title="Cylinder head" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_head" target="_blank">cylinder heads</a> on the <a title="Cast iron" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cast_iron" target="_blank">cast iron</a> block used in the big F-Series <a title="Pickup truck" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickup_truck" target="_blank">pickup trucks</a>. After debuting a visual refresh for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/mustang" target="_blank">Mustang</a> a year ago, Ford has spent the last two months announcing fresh new powertrains for the base and GT models. That process has now come full circle with SVT rolling out a heart transplant for the Shelby GT500. The 2011 model finally has the aluminum powerplant we all wanted when it debuted, and the effect is absolutely en-lightening.</p>

<p>In honor of the 40th anniversary of Parnelli Jones’ 1970 Trans-Am championship in a Mustang BOSS 302 prepared by Bud Moore Engineering, Ford Racing is introducing the BOSS 302R, a factory-built race car ready for track days and road racing in a number of Grand-Am, SCCA and NASA classes.</p>
